The MasterSeries Coating Line Tip Sheet
General information & user's guide

MASTERSERIES PERMANENT RUST SEALER SURFACER is one of the most powerful primers ever developed by the industrial coatings business. This system is called The Three Coat Polyurethane System and as the name implies, three coats--two silver, one color.

MCU is typically used throughout the industry with great success. Application is fairly simple once your realize the principles of this sealant. The resin used is hardened by moisture and is completely waterproof. The leafing pigment from metallic powders blocks the oxygen, aluminum and stainless steel work best. When handling MCU, you must WEAR GLOVES and avoid leaving the cans open for any period of time. The moisture in the air acts as the hardener. Some moisture cured urethanes are very sensitive to sunlight and must be used only under the car. READ LABEL INSTRUCTIONS as to thinning and U.V. sunlight exposure.

MASTERSERIES SILVER
FOR USE AS A PRIMER. MCU silver is the best for body work. It's sandable, sticks to clean steel, goes over old paint, bondo, and spot putty. TWO COATS are always recommended. Clean body panels should be scuffed with 220 grit paper and treated with METAL PREP for maximum adhesion. METAL PREP SHOULD BE WIPED WITH A DAMP RAG THEN A DRY RAG. Be sure panel is thoroughly dry. DO NOT USE LACQUER THINNER TO WIPE PANELS. DO NOT REDUCE; SPRAY AT PACKAGE STRENGTH. If it will not spray, thin by 10% MAXIMUM with NAPTHA OR MCT 101 THINNER. HOT TIP: Foam sponge brushes or foam sponge rollers used with the silver work great.

RECOAT TIME IS USUALLY 3 1/2 HOURS OR LONGER IN DRY CLIMATES, FASTER IN HUMID CLIMATES. When MCU is dry to the touch, then you can apply a second coat. When priming over the silver with another primer, same rules apply. YOU CAN USE ANY KIND OF PRIMER OR PAINT OVER THE SILVER MCU. IF THE SILVER MCU CURES MORE THAN SEVEN DAYS, SCUFF WITH 220 LIGHTLY BEFORE PAINTING.

PART STORAGE: Paint with the silver, then prime within 24 hours. You then can store it for years.

SURFACE PREPARATION. MCU silver/stainless are designed to be painted over marginally prepared surfaces which means wire brush, hand tool cleaning, or power tool cleaning. For maximum results, sandblasting is your best surface prep along with acid dip where all the rust is removed.

WARNING: RUBBER GLOVES ARE STRONGLY SUGGESTED EVEN BEFORE YOU OPEN THE CONTAINER. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN YOU WEARING THESE COATINGS FOR AT LEAST A WEEK.

STORAGE & HANDLING: MCU is activated by moisture. The longer the lid is off the can, the shorter the shelf life. Do not paint directly from the can unless you use the entire can that day. Do not apply in any area where the surface will be subject to condensation or rain for at least 6 hours. Keep the tops of the cans clean. Paint lying in the gutter of the can will permanently weld the can closed. The use of plastic food wrap between the lid and the gutter of the can is suggested.

MCU SILVER: Frames and floor pans are a good place for our newer customers to get experience with this type of coating. MCU SILVER SHOULD BE USED ANYWHERE RUST IS LIKELY TO FORM OR HAS FORMED IN THE PAST. FOR INSTANCE, BOTTOMS OF THE FRONT FENDERS, LOWER QUARTER PANELS, ROCKER PANELS, ROOF DRIP PANELS, WINDSHIELD CHANNELS. CHROME MOLDING CLIP HOLES AND WHERE BOLTS SCRATCH PAINT. MCU WILL NOT RUST BEYOND THE SCRATCH. MCU SILVER MAY BE USED TO PRIME THE ENTIRE CAR.

WARNING FOR SPRAY APPLICANTS: Charcoal respirator is required. Confined areas air supplied is required. SEE DATA SHEET.

VINYL ROOF REPLACEMENT. Two/three coats of silver is recommended under new vinyl roofs.

PATCH PANELS: Cut the rusted area out and flange the area. Inside the flange area, apply 2 coats of MCU silver. Paint the back of the patch panel then weld it in. After you grind the wells, 2 coats of silver over the entire repair. Body filler can be applied, sanded, another coat of MCU silver, prime, and paint. SPECIAL NOTE: IF THE BONDO CONTAINS MOISTURE, MCU WILL PRODUCE VERY SMALL BUBBLES. THIS IS THE MOISTURE BEING PULLED FROM THE BONDO. SAND WITH 220 GRIT PAPER, PRIME, AND PAINT.

WELDED SEAMS, BOTTOMS OF DOORS. These areas are hard to reach and the best prep is Rust Away Rust Remover, Ospho, or Oxisolv. These acids soak down into the weleds and neutralize the rust. They then should be followed by a water rinse. After it is thoroughly dry, coat with MCU silver, letting it run down into the welds. THIS TECHNIQUE IS GREAT FOR BOXED FRAMES ON THE INSIDE. THE USE OF AN ENGINE CLEANING GUN WORKS GREAT TO GET INSIDE THESE HARD TO REACH AREAS.

GET RID OF THE PITS! MCU silver levels heavy pitting. 3 LIGHT COATS are generally recommended. MCU silver forms an air tight seal over the metal to prevent rust from forming and existing rust from spreading. It is not recommended to sand it because you could go through the air tight seal. Prime with your regular sandable primer. Sand that primer then top coat. HOW SOON TO PRIME? 3 1/2 HOURS MINIMUM OR DRY OT THE TOUCH, WITHIN 24 HOURS IS IDEAL. AFTER 48 HOURS, ANY URETHANE OR EPOXY PRIMER SHOULD BE SANDED FOR PAINT ADHESION. THIS INCLUDES THE MCU, AG111, AND THE MASTERSERIES CUSTOM CHASSIS COATING.

WATERPROOF AND GLUE. MCU is great for waterproofing cardboard, such as shelf trays and the backs of door panels. We have clear available for that. The clear MCU is great for wood work, such as Model A door frames that have rotted. As for a glue, works great on running board rubber and in areas where adhesives do not hold up well.

CHROME BUMPERS: 2 COATS SILVER ON THE BACK SIDE.

LEAKY WINDSHIELDS. Remove the trim, blow the dirt and dust out from the channel, place cardboard over the dash. Thin MCU silver slightly and pour or brush between the glass and the channel. The MCU will travel the same route the water does and cut off the leak. 2 applications may be necessary.

ROTTEN GAS TANKS. Thoroughly CLEAN tank with RUST REMOVERS. Etching solutions to remove rust and treat the galvanized metal. RINSE with water inside and out and let THOROUGHLY DRY. Paint 2 coats of silver on the outside of the tank, pour the remainder of the can on the inside and slosh it around. Pour MCU back to can, replace lid. Apply second coat 4 hours later. Stand tank on end letting it DRAIN COMPLETELY. LET CURE 48 HOURS BEFORE USE. THIN COATS are recommended. DO NOT ALLOW COATING TO PUDDLE.

MASTERSERIES CUSTOM CHASSIS COATING (BLACK). MCU black is a very high gloss black designed for frames, floor pans, inside and underneath the car. IT IS NOT SUNLIGHT STABLE. IT SHOULD NOT BE USED ON ANYTHING EXPOSED TO SUNLIGHT. AG111 WOULD BE USED IN AREAS OF HIGH SUNLIGHT EXPOSURE. MCU black can be applied directly over rust and works very well, but for permanent results MCU silver should be used as a primer. The MCU black goes on beautifully with a regular polyester paint brush for that sprayed look. May also be used on springs. NEVER A BRUSH MARK!

TEMPERATURE. MasterSeries paints should be applied at room temperature. If you want the paint thicker, cool it down by putting it in the refrigerator. If you want it thinner, put it where it's warm. As for application temperature, try to apply it over 40F.
