Mastercoat Metal Prep & Rust Remover is your first step in your battle with rust. It's been around for decades. When we painted cars with lacquer it was the only thing that really prevented rust from returning. Mastercoat Metal Prep leaves a zinc phosphate coating behind which combats rust. When you use spray cans good quality metal prep will extend the service life of your spray can paint job because it's lacquer. When you strip a car down to bare metal applying metal prep we'll keep it rust free indoors for up to a year.

The first thing to know about Mastercoat Metal Prep regarding application is: DO NOT RINSE WITH WATER. A great way to apply metal prep to a panel is use a maroon Scotch-Brite pad, mask and gloves. Put the Mastercoat Metal Prep in a plastic spray bottle, spray the prep on the pad (not on the panel) and go back and forth in a straight motion. This will also remove residual grease and oils and etch the surface to promote adhesion. Wipe off excess with a clean dry rag.

If you apply the Mastercoat Permanent Rust Sealer (any type) over it there's nothing more  humanly possible you can do to prevent rust. You've burned it, added a zinc phosphate layer, and an airtight seal over it.  Follow it up with your automotive surfacing primer and go from there.

For a soaking solution: pour the Mastercoat Metal Prep  into into a plastic container and soak. This is an excellent way to de-rust nuts, bolts, fasteners and small parts. Another important use for Mastercoat Metal Prep with zinc is welded seams. Good rust work starts from the inside out. A good practice when treating the bottoms of your doors' rockers is to pour a generous amount Mastercoat Metal Prep down inside all the welded seams. Give it about a week to work and follow it up with Mastercoat Permanent Rust Sealer. Check out our videos on the Mastercoat USA YouTube for more helpful tips on application for our products!
