The Master Series Coating Line: Cleaning Up Salt From the Winter

Now that spring has sprung, it's time for maintenance around your vehicle. Neutralizing salt residue is the crucial first step, and the most effective cleaning agent for neutralizing salt on your chassis and underbody is electric dishwasher soap.  A brand like Electasol is a good choice, and if you have a pressure washer, definitely make use of it.  The way to go about this cleaning is to dissolve the soap and spray the bottom of your vehicle, chassis, underbody, inside of fenders, and the back of the bumpers.  Your vehicle, when driven in winter, is like a salt spray cabinet test (especially if you live in the Northeast!), so it's important to do this as soon as the weather allows.  After the salt has been neutralized, you can then consider using various kinds of acid and converters, wire wheels, and grinders to prepare for coats of chassis paint.

The method we've always used to prevent salt corrosion on the chassis and underbody in the future for many winters to come, that is tried and true, is to start with multiple thin coats of Mastercoat Permanent Rust Sealer.  This is effective, as oxygen depriving pigments have to layer one over the other to block oxygen.  No matter what, one coat just won't cut it.  In the 40 years I've spent painting cars, I haven't seen a paint that will work well with just one coat.  Our coating system is known industrially as the Three Coat Polyurethane System, and it was named that for a reason.  Leading competitors such as POR15, Chassis Saver, and KBS assure you that you can "just use black", and this is why they receive mixed reviews.  Only applying the black is a simple solution to combat rust, but it's a short term solution because it's not air tight. If you use that method, you may find that black peeling off two years later and rusting. And now, you've got twice as much work because now you have to paint it again.
