ATTENTION! READ THIS IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT AVAILABILITY AND SUBSTITUTES & USE: If Mastercoat Metal Prep is unavailable, you may use a metal prep of a different brand that is phosphoric acid, preferably with zinc as an ingredient. YES, you may use Ospho or any metal prep that contains phosphoric acid. Apply and let dry on the surface, do not rinse/neutralize. Make sure surface is completely dried and apply rust sealer. Even if all rust is not dissolved or surface re-rusts, rust sealer can still be applied and will encapsulate the rust. RUST SEALER CAN ALSO BE APPLIED WITHOUT THE USE OF METAL PREP. Just remove any loose scale, wipe clean with mineral spirits, and apply rust sealer according to package instructions.

Metal Prep Instructions for Use:
Mastercoat® Metal Prep & Rust Remover is a must for quality restoration work. It will dissolve light to moderate surface
rust and has a detergent action to get rid of grease and oils. Mastercoat® Metal Prep & Rust Remover etches the steel
and leaves a zinc phosphate coating behind. It also neutralizes the rust, deep within the steel. The zinc phosphate
coating, especially with ordinary paints, will prevent rust from forming under your new paint work.
For parts and panels storage, Mastercoat® Metal Prep & Rust Remover will clean and derust, leave a zinc phosphate
coating, and will last for a year indoors without rusting. Don’t put cheap spray can primer on parts you just stripped!
Simply moisten the rag and wipe the part down with a thin layer of the prep. Mastercoat® Metal Prep & Rust Remover
delivers years of extra wear to a paint job.
Methods of application:
Spray, brush, or wipe on to metal surfaces. If the rust is heavier, let the Metal Prep soak and give it time to dissolve. Do
not allow to puddle. Scuff with a scuff pad, making sure the surface is smooth and clean. While wet with Metal Prep,
wipe the surface with a clean cloth in a smooth, even direction. Do not rub in a circular motion. If any rust spots remain,
soak spots with a chamois, paper towel, or any absorbent material and allow it to sit anywhere from 20 minutes to two
hours. Buff with a Scotch Brite pad and re-wet. Buff again until rust is removed. Allow to air dry for 2-3 hours, and then
check if rust is still present. Reapply Metal Prep only if rust is still present, dry with paper towel or lint-free cloth. Do not
let dry until rust is dissolved; keep surface wet with Metal Prep until rust is dissolved. When rust is satisfactorily
dissolved, allow to air dry. DO NOT RINSE. It is best to wait overnight before applying primer/paint.
IMPORTANT NOTES: It is crucial to make sure Metal Prep is completely dried before applying Mastercoat®
Permanent Rust Sealer, Mastercoat® Chassis Black, or AG111 or else these paints may bubble. Prime surface
and then paint. Do not prime Metal Prep treated surface until ready to paint. Metal Prep is a rust remover but
also a metal etch, so in some cases, the surface may turn black or gray. This is normal. If gummy residue is
present after applying Metal Prep, neutralize Metal Prep with water and clean with a scuff pad until it is no
longer gummy. Do not apply primer or paint until gummy residue is gone and surface has dried thoroughly.
Metal prep is for metal only; it is not recommended to apply this product to a painted surface.
For excess zinc powder: After drying, Metal Prep may leave behind an excess of zinc powder. Re-wet with Metal Prep
and then scrub with a scuff pad, dampened with water. Allow to dry and then apply a thin coat of Metal Prep with a
paper towel or dry rag to prevent flash rusting.
Mastercoat Metal Prep & Rust Remover can be neutralized with water in the event of an accident.
Mastercoat® Metal Prep & Rust Remover is recommended for cleaning gas tanks inside and out. It will dissolve the
rust, etch the galvanizing to ensure coating adhesion, and take care of any residual oil or gas inside tank.
Mastercoat® Metal Prep & Rust Remover is recommended when using our Hot Jet High Heat Ceramic Coating. After
sandblasting manifolds and headers, moisten a clean lint-free rag, wipe headers and manifolds down, let sit overnight.
This will prevent the coating from rusting when sitting for a long period of time (winter months) in your garage.
Special note: When derusting a perfectly covered rust area, and the rust will not move, it’s likely because there is paint
under it. Apply paint stripper. You will usually see the paint bleed up through the rust. Neutralize the paint remover with
water, and reapply metal prep or rust remover.
